Underlying Technology & Scientific Principle

A bag filter is a pressure vessel containing one or more felt or mesh bags supported by a rigid basket. Water enters the bag inside-out, suspended solids are retained on or within the bag fabric, and clarified water exits the housing. The bag is a disposable depth or surface filter sized for nominal micron retention.

Working Mechanism

Felt bags act as depth filters: particles are captured throughout the thickness of the needle-punched fibre. Mesh / monofilament bags act as surface filters with a defined pore opening. Differential pressure rises as solids accumulate; at a setpoint the housing is isolated, vented, and the spent bag swapped for a new one — no backwash, no media handling.

Separation / Removal Efficiency

Standard ratings span 1–200 µm nominal. Typical service: inlet TSS up to ~100 mg/L reduced to <5 mg/L at the chosen micron cut; absolute-rated bags available for tighter polishing.

Operating Principle & Parameters

Flux 20–60 m³/h per #2 bag; change-out at 1.0–1.5 bar differential. Very low clean pressure drop (<0.1 bar). No utilities beyond the feed pump.

Flow Rates & Volumetric Capacities

Single-bag housings 1–40 m³/h; multi-bag vessels (4–24 bags) handle 200–1,500 m³/h with simple skid integration.

Fluid Media Compatibility

Polypropylene, polyester or nylon felt / mesh bags in CS, SS or duplex housings with quick-opening closures. Wide chemical, temperature and pressure compatibility.

System Schematic & Process Integration

Frontline coarse protection ahead of cartridge filters, RO pre-treatment, ion exchange or process equipment; also point-of-use guard filtration for cooling and seawater systems.

Options / Variations Available

Single vs. multi-bag housings; felt vs. mesh; high-efficiency / absolute bags; magnetic inserts for ferrous duty; side-entry vs. top-entry for fast change-out.

System Complexity & Automation Level

Low — manual change-out on DP indication. Automatic self-cleaning bag filters (scraper / backwash designs) available for continuous high-solids service.

Applications & Performance Delivered

RO / cartridge filter pre-protection

Removes coarse solids to extend downstream element life and lower OPEX.

Cooling-water side-stream

Captures pipe scale, biofilm shed and debris in recirculating systems.

Process & utility water polishing

Low-cost particulate guard on raw, service and seawater intakes.
