Underlying Technology & Scientific Principle

A cartridge filter uses cylindrical replaceable elements — pleated membrane, melt-blown depth, string-wound or sintered metal — to retain particles by surface sieving and depth capture. Absolute-rated elements provide a defined removal efficiency (typically 99.9% at the rated micron), making them the standard guard filter ahead of membranes and high-purity processes.

Working Mechanism

Feed water enters the vessel and flows from outside to inside each cartridge through the filter medium. Pleated elements maximise surface area for low pressure drop and long life; melt-blown depth elements grade fibre density inward to capture a broad particle distribution. Spent cartridges are removed and replaced — no backwash.

Separation / Removal Efficiency

Available from 0.1 µm absolute up to 50 µm nominal. Typical RO-guard service: inlet SDI15 5–6 polished to <3, with absolute removal at 5 or 1 µm to protect spiral elements.

Operating Principle & Parameters

Flux 1.5–3.0 m³/h per 10″ equivalent; clean ΔP <0.2 bar; change-out at 1.0–1.7 bar differential. Service life days to months depending on upstream conditioning.

Flow Rates & Volumetric Capacities

Multi-round housings (3, 5, 7, 12, 36, 78+ rounds of 10″–60″ cartridges) cover 5 to >1,000 m³/h on a single vessel.

Fluid Media Compatibility

Polypropylene, polyethersulfone, PTFE, nylon, glass-fibre and sintered SS in coded SS or duplex housings. Compatible with hot, sanitary, high-purity, chemical and saline service.

System Schematic & Process Integration

Mandatory 5 µm (or 1 µm) absolute guard immediately upstream of RO / NF / UF skids; final polish on demineralised water, condensate polishing and high-purity loops; gas / vent sterile filtration.

Options / Variations Available

Pleated vs. depth vs. string-wound; double-open-end vs. 222/226 sanitary connections; absolute vs. nominal; high-flow large-diameter elements for low cartridge count.

System Complexity & Automation Level

Low — DP-based change-out; integrity testing for sanitary / sterile duty. Easily monitored via differential-pressure transmitter to SCADA.
