Underlying Technology & Scientific Principle

The sequencing batch reactor is an activated-sludge process operated in timed cycles within a single basin: fill, react (aeration), settle, decant and idle. Performing aeration and clarification sequentially in one tank removes the need for separate clarifiers and provides built-in flow equalisation.

Working Mechanism

Wastewater fills the reactor over a mixed biomass; during the aerated react phase, micro-organisms oxidise organics and (with anoxic phases) nitrify/denitrify. Aeration stops for quiescent settling, clarified supernatant is decanted, and surplus sludge is wasted before the next cycle.

Separation / Removal Efficiency

Achieves >90–95% BOD/COD removal with effluent BOD <20 mg/L and TSS <30 mg/L, plus nitrogen removal when anoxic phases are programmed.

Operating Principle & Parameters

Cycle 4–8 h with phase times tuned to load; F/M ratio, MLSS and dissolved-oxygen setpoints govern performance. Inherent equalisation buffers variable flow.

Flow Rates & Volumetric Capacities

Twin/multi-basin SBRs from small packages to large municipal/industrial plants; basins alternate for continuous treatment.

Fluid Media Compatibility

Concrete/steel basins with fine-bubble aeration, decanters and mixers; biomass in suspension.

System Schematic & Process Integration

Secondary/tertiary biological stage after primary de-oiling and toxicity control; ahead of filtration/membrane polishing for reuse.

Options / Variations Available

Conventional SBR, ICEAS continuous-inflow, granular-sludge (aerobic granular) variants for nutrient removal.

System Complexity & Automation Level

High — fully programmed cycle, aeration, decant and wasting on timers and DO/level; complex control is its main demand.
